Hebrews 11:15-16

Christians are not ‘sinners saved by grace.’ We were sinners, have been saved by grace, and are now saints (Ephesians 2:19, Colossians 1:12). So, why do we still sin?

And indeed if they had been thinking of that country from which they went out, they would have had opportunity to return.” Hebrews 11:15 NASB

If we, as saints, think about our old selves (i.e. our sinful nature or past sins), we are giving our flesh power to return to those sins/natures. “For as he thinks within himself, so he is….” Proverbs 23:7 NASB

But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God; for He has prepared a city for them.” Hebrews 11:16 NASB

If we desire freedom from sin, we will spend our time and energy thinking about knowing and pleasing Him. Once we humble ourselves and pray, the Holy Spirit gives us the power to take every thought captive (2 Corinthians 10:5) and remain focused on His kingdom, rather than ourselves. Since God is not ashamed to be called our God, we do not need to be ashamed to be called His saints, even if we stumble (Romans 8:1).
